Square dance developed in the
United States of America from the various European folk dances of the
immigrants. What is special about it is the "caller" who announces the
individual dance figures. Now and then this made the coordination of
the different figures and dancers easier.
The name of the common dance arose from the formation in which the dancers start a dance. 4 couples at a time line up in a quadrat, the "square". Young and old dance together to brisk country and western music as well as to pop music. Square dance is about changing special formations of dancers using simple walking steps only.
The appearance of square dance is affected by the dancers’ obligatory petticoats and the western accessories.
In a "course" (class) the prospective dancers learn the approx. 70 figures of the square dance basic programme (mainstream) within 9 months. Only afterwards will they be able to go and see the versatile square dance events (see column „Learning Square Dance“).
It is neither necessary nor desired to learn individual dances by heart. The caller puts the figures together in varying combinations which keeps dancing exciting and the pot boiling. Therefore it is more important to listen carefully and to react fast than to be fit.
The square dancer does not know competition, winners or trophies. The only things that count are the fun of motion, the group experience and meeting people of all ages and nationalities. This happens for example by visiting clubs or by going to the quarterly European "jamborees" with more than 1100 square dancers. At big events like these you will often find square dance shops where you can purchase an adequate outfit. However, you can just as well give in to your own creativity and skill to design new dresses and accessories!
Square dance is INTERNATIONAL. The figures are the same all over the world which enables you to dance not only in the approx. 400 clubs in Germany, but also in the meanwhile about 10.000 clubs worldwide.
To cut a long story short: Square dance is kindness and companionship expressed in motion to music. Neither social barriers nor age or looks play a role. Important is solely the way to deal with each other!
